Wall and Space

1. Design Topic: Wall and Space

2. Objectives:

(1)to train the ability of creative design;

(2)to train the ability of space organisation;

(3)to train the ability of basic modeling;

(4)to train the ability of digital drawing.

3. Description:

There is a wall with height of 360 cm, length of 1800 cm, and thickness of 30cm. Right-angle cuttings are to be made on the wall. The cut sections should be connected with the wall. The angle of outward fold is without limitation. The objectives of cuttings and outward fold are:

  • to form a number of space;

  • to demonstrate a clear continuous relationship between the various spaces; that is, to form a spatial sequence.

Nine rules should be obeyed when the wall is cut:

  • The cutting should be a right angle (90-degree angle); however, the angle of outward fold is without limitation.

  • The depth and span ratio of girder (beam) is not less than 1/8. (D/L>1/8)

  • The depth of girder is not less than 50 cm.

  • The width and height ratio of vertical elements is not less than 1/10. (W/H>1/10)

  • The size of vertical elements are not less than 30 cm × 30 cm.

  • Additional three circular columns are optional; however, they can not be independent. (The relationship between diameter and height of columns are the same as rules 4 and 5)

  • Space must be generated on both sides of the main wall.

  • The outcome of the final design must be placed on a backplane (1800 cm x 450 cm).

  • Space must be available for people passing through; thus, normally, the height is not less than 220 cm and the width is not less than 90 cm.

4. Requirement:

(1) At least 10 development process models. (Scale: 1/50)

(2) A final model. (Scale: 1/30)

(3) Drawings, including plans, elevations, sections and perspectives. (Scale: 1/30)

(4) Models should be made by gray cardboard.

(5) Drawings need to be digital output with A1 size.
